Growth of functional cranial components in rats with intrauterine growth retardation after treatment with growth hormone.
The goal of this study was to analyse the effect of growth hormone (GH) on catch-up growth of functional facial (splanchnocranial) and neurocranial components in rats with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: control (C), sham-operated (SH), IUGR, and IUGR + GH. IUGR was surgically induced and GH was administered between 21 and 60 days of a...
متن کاملDefective growth hormone secretion in children with pycnodysostosis and improved linear growth after growth hormone treatment.
Short stature is a characteristic feature of pycnodysostosis. We report defective growth hormone secretion in response to provocation and low insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentration in five out of six patients with pycnodysostosis. Physiological replacement with growth hormone increased IGF-I concentration and improved linear growth in these children.
متن کاملGrowth hormone deficiency after treatment of acute leukaemia in children.
Growth hormone (GH) secretion was studied in 15 children at various times after treatment for acute lymphatic leukaemia. Impaired GH responses both to hypoglycaemia and to Bovril were found in 4 children. 13 of the children had been given prophylactic cranial irradiation of either 2500 rads in 10 fractions or 2400 rads in 20 fractions. The reduction in GH responses in those given the former dos...
متن کاملGrowth hormone treatment in non-growth hormone-deficient children
Until 1985 growth hormone (GH) was obtained from pituitary extracts, and was available in limited amounts only to treat severe growth hormone deficiency (GHD). With the availability of unlimited quantities of GH obtained from recombinant DNA technology, researchers started to explore new modalities to treat GHD children, as well as to treat a number of other non-GHD conditions. Although with so...
متن کاملGrowth Hormone Secretion and Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid Axis Function after Cranial Radiotherapy in Children
Background: When the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) is included in the treatment field in children and adults, a variety of neuroendocrine disturbances are more common especially in children than has been appreciated in the past. This study was carried out to evaluate growth hormone secretion and the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis function in children after cranial radiotherapy. Subject...
